Default Re-entry permit expiring - medical emergency

My parents have a green card and they are in India right now with a re-entry permit. The permit is due to expire on June 6 next month. They were planning to come back to US on June 1st and had booked a one way ticket as well. Unfortunately, my father had some medical condition last week and doctors are advising him not to travel for next two months. What are their options? Is there a way through which they can extend the re-entry permit or enter US on an expired re-entry permit (using some supporting medical documents)?

Thanks

Yes. When they left they applied for a re-entry permit of 2 years. The application was approved and that permit is expiring next month.
