Default Dress Code for H1B VISA Stamping @ US Consulate?

Is it mandatory to wear business formal? I am going to get visa stamping with my wife, she is applying for H4.

Thanks!

They may not care even if you go in casuals but may not be a good idea to push it that far.

As mentioned in the above post thye don't care about your dress code. They rather care whether your company is a genuine company and pays you the salary as mentioned on your H1B LCA promptly (~.. you pay the taxes to the Govt )

Be decent. Look good.

I've been there with a shirt and jeans, sometime shirt and trouser.
But never a tie.

I wore a T-shirt and Jeans; they did not ask me any questions.
No need to be "formal"; especially if you are going for re-stamping or already living in US. When you go back to your home country, it is "vacation" for you and so you are normally going to be casual.
Good Luck.

I have ALWAYS gone in T-shirt and Jeans and never had a problem. They dont really care about your appearance, although it is a good idea to dress decently.

Default Yes - please go in designer Suits !!

Just Kidding - as long as you are wearing decent clothes no one should reject your visa (which otherwise should have been approved) for wearing a jeans or for not wearing formal dress.

But when someone created a thread for this - let me share "one dress" people shouldn't wear.- this is something you would want to avoid, this was told to me 9yrs back when i first came to this country and appeared for Interview first time.

That dress is - "Red Shirt"

Hope this helps !

Casuals - most of the IOs don't mind.

Formal - everyone likes it. I would rather go for formal to be on safe side.

Default Yellow jeans and Red T shirt

The very first time I went in formals (for my F1 visa). After that I've been to the consulate seven times, and its always been in jeans and t shirt. Next time I'm thinking of going Tarzan style. It will save me the security hassle and will serve as a good respite from the Chennai heat.

You are going there for a visa as a professional ( in IT, medicine etc). Dress like a professional. Need not be in a tie, but semi formal is recommended. How you carry yourself speaks about you. There is no rule, no norm, and no guideline but when it comes to communication, non-verbal communication counts a lot.
