Default Will something good happen before end of year 2007??

Members of New Democrat Coalition in the House Support for Highly Skilled Foreigm Worker Immigration Legislation

On October 22, 2007, a group of the Congressmen named New Democarat Coalition wrote a letter to Madame Pelosi to act on the highly skilled foreign worker immigration legislation. The proposals in the letter includes:
Modernizing student visa programs;
Aligning the supply of H-1B visas for professional workers with the needs of U.S. employers so that the visa supply can respond to market demands;
Bringing the supply of employment-based green cards into line with the needs of U.S. employers;
Recapturing” authorized but unused green card numbers;
Strengthening agencies’ ability to enforce visa program rules and punish violators;
Exempting returning H-2B workers from annual H-2B of 66,000;
Recapturing 61,000 unused EB-3 visa numbers including 25,000 for nurses and physical therapists; and
Simplifying H-2A approval process.
This move is important in that unlike the comprehensive immigration reform, the roadblock to the "employment-based immigration reform" has been presented by the Democrats in the House and the Senate. For instance, yesterday the Senate passed a legislation to increase ACWIA American Worker training fee for the H-1B petitions from current $1,500 to $3,500.

Why do they have to attach H1-B provisions to everything? Just my merely looking at "H1-B", the law makers wont pass any bill. H1-B is so infamous.

Default Why no activity on the Senate ?

Why is it that only the House dems and Reps are concerned about our causes and the Senate is busy derailing our cause ? Lets see how the House acts now and saves us from the $ 2000 increase in the H1b training fee . ? This will rove if they are really behind our cause or are just paying lip service .

Default It will happen!!

I have a strong feeling that something will happen before this year. I know it is disappointing to see our bills getting defeated. But how long they can keep postponing skilled immigrants issues. There is no way US corporate companies can survice without us. It will happen before thie year.

Let us hope for the best!!

One thing is sure. If nothing happens this year, we don't stand a chance next year. But then, one good thing will come out of it. At least we'll know if they want us here or not, and we can start planning accordingly.

I agree with you, with everything that was going on (backlog of close to million EB applicants, 17 years since last revision of quota, avaialability of unused VISA numbers since 6-7 years, pressure from Corporate and Institutions etc) but if nothing happens by next June, I am sure it is not going to happen until 2009.

And anything that happens/materialises in 2009 is a naturally-riping fruit.

I still dont understand how is increasing H1B cap from 65k to 115k going to solve any problem. Even if cap is raised to 115K, it will be met in first 2 days of April, and then what??

the only hope is when the labor, HHS bill comes for confernce someone in house instead of assigning 61K for nurses modifies that to have all the recaptured spread across... otherwise we need to wait till 2010...

I'm pretty sure that something will happen within the next one month.

Sadly, I've been sure of that at all times for the last 2 years.

Be optimistic, keep trying but don't get disappointed when it doesn't happen. Sooner or later, it will.

Coz that is what the COMPANIES want. Companies are the ones paying the bulk of taxes and doing the lobbying not individuals like us unfortunately.

Default EB3 Retrogression and solution

If anything is to happen, it has to happen this year only. Nothing is going to happen next year or even in ........ (god save us!!!!).
After that everything depends upon the political situation in 2009.
If republicans win back congress and retain white house, our chances are better. We can hope for favorable speaker and chairman of Judicial committee in house. On senate side we can hope for return of Sen. Specter as chairman of Judiciary committee. I think all this depends upon one single factor. Iraq!!
As the reports indicate situation in Iraq is improving. If it improves substantially by election day, Republican prospects and thereby our prospects would improve. So to solve our problems let us pray for peace in Iraq.
As things stand at this moment Dems would do better in 2008 elections and that is certainly not a good situation for us.
How delighted and naive we were last year in November to see Republicans loosing congress! At least I was very confident that our problems would be solved this year. And how things have turned out !!!!!!
The truth is we really don't understand American politics. It is different.
So my first prayer is for something happening this year. Let us all lobby first and then pray.

Jungalee43, I don't buy your analysis. Consider how the Republicans controlled the White House and Congress for effectively 6 years. And they have nothing to show for it when it comes to immigration reform. President Bush had to look to the Democrats to get a decent shot at passing immigration reform earlier in the year, which would have helped out a lot of us.

Putting the GOP back in the majority and the White House would also ensure much more influence to groups like NumberUSA. This is the last things we want. (If Senator Session comes any closer to having any real power I'm not sure I'd want to stay here).

The problem, as I see it, is that (right and left) populist wings of both parties have been successful in blocking immigration reform. With stronger Democratic majorities in both houses, I think we would stand a much better chance of sensible immigration reform.
