Talking My license denied today

I came to us in 1999 on F-1 change to H-1,applied for 485. Moved to michigan last week from missouri.

Approached SOS in michigan today and they told me to F*** ***, since I am not a permanent resident or citizen. I have not visited my home country in 5 years, nor have any idea about my international license. My MO license will expire in a week.

I can't walk 11 miles to work in this cold weather, since there is no bus service. Can't afford to go to my home country due to work related issues.

Can somebody help me

If they don't issue a DL to you within MI then you should explore using your MO license to apply for an International Driving Permit/ Inter-American Driving Permit

Take a look at these:
http://www.aaa.com/vacation/idpc.html
http://www.aaa.com/vacation/idpapplc...d=212&secure=N

Hope it helps!

Default Other options that I can think of..

1) You can go back to MO and renew your license
2) Use your normal indian license. I have read on some other thread that you can do this. I know a firend of mine who got insurance using India DL
3) Go to a nieghbouring state (ohio, indiana or IL) if you have contacts and get one.

Default Do you have an Indian DL?

http://www.michigan.gov/documents/re...rt_20508_7.pdf

"The licenses of residents of foreign countries that are considered valid are listed below. An international driving permit is not required. For licenses that are not in English, an interpreter may be required to determine the license's validity.
Courts and law enforcement should not seize and destroy foreign drivers' licenses pursuant to section 625g of the Michigan Vehicle Code"
(Indian DLs are included in the list 1949 Convention on Road Traffic)

Thanks Walking_Dude for this pointer

Default International or other-country DL

I think that International or other-country DL will not help. You will need to provide your DL in order to register, get title and license plate and insurance for your car.
I think the best approach is to acquire residence in neighboring state so you will be able to properly register and insure your car.

I was suggesting a temporary solution. I have done it myself in MA as well as in CA, and it has worked, there were companies who offered auto insurance based on Home Country DL.
It might help him start driving in MI while he figures out how to deal with the bigger issue.

There are no two ways about it, state issued DL is a necessity. To deny a DL to a tax paying individual is "infuriating" to say the least!

I saw another post regarding this website a while back that it was a scam. Please search the forum. Pls use at your own risk. Also, you need to be physically present to acquire a DL in India unless it is a renewal.

apahilaj will become famous soon enough
Default it's making me sick

First the PIMS issues with H1 verification and now this issue with DL in MI; it feels that we are like unwanted population here...Personally, I am getting this feeling that they are trying to get rid of us gradually by creating frustration in each and every step...On one hand we are permanent residents to them when we pay taxes and on the other hand we are treated like sh** (excuse my language but I am terribly frustrated). I don't live in MI but I feel the pain already for guys who are stuck in MI. The whole system is making me sick. It feels really sad when I don't see any where in the news or listen on radio about 3 international students getting shot at US universities and instead I hear the news every 15 minutes on the radio about some guy setting his dog on fire..They need to set their priority straight...

On a side note, I am mailing the letters to President tommorow.

God bless us all!

All this is happening, because we choose to be a silent community. A Highly paid, legal, tax paying, law-abiding, silently suffering, cowardish, shy, cannot stand up for oneself, community.
No other person/group or community would have tolerated this, there would have been letters flying to media, radio news, president would have already recieved 100,000 letters.

I sent this communication to ACLU Michigan Chapter. This may not be politically sexy for them to take up right away. But this is an attempt.

http://www.aclumich.org/modules.php?name=Contact

To Director of Legislative Affairs
Michigan ACLU chapter

Michigan Attorney General voiced an opinion that only US Citizens and Permanent residents can receive Michigan driving licenses. This is skewed interpretation of Michigan law. Thousands of legal immigrants like H1, L1, B1, TN VISA holders and students on F-1, J-1 Visas live and work/study in Michigan. They have driving previliges now. With State Secretary denying driving previliges to this population under new interpretation, they are in considerable pain and suffering. Please help us in challenging the twisted interpretation of the Attorney General and curtail the biased actions of State Secretary.
