Default NC good but high state taxes

I lived in Charlotte, NC for more than a year.

pros:

Small beautiful city. One of the most beautiful downtowns. Nations second largest Banking center. ( Bank of America headquarters). Lot of permanent openings. Fewer contracting positions.

Cons:

State income tax is one of the highest in the country. Equals the state tax of California.

I moved last year from the Bay Area in CA to the triangle area in NC (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill). Each of the 3 cities has their own character.

The triangle's a very good place to live and raise a family. Very low unemployment, plenty of jobs, diverse, well-educated residents, relatively mild weather, good schools, low housing costs, etc. You are within driving distance of most of the eastern seaboard. (10 hours to NY and 10 hours to Orlando). Beaches are 2 hours away, and mountains 4 hours away.

Let me know if you have any questions about the triangle and RTP. Good luck with your decision.

Default Triangle Area

I lived in triangle are for 3 years, until 2001. One of the best places in USA to live and Raise family. Very good schools and colleges, well educated residents, less traffic and more laid back life compared to bay area or nj/ny area.

Only one drawback when i left was, jobs were concentrated in Telecom area and being on H1 it was hard to find a job there when i was laid off.

So i think if you have greencard or plan to take permanent position using AC21, it would be a good move. I myself plan to move to triangle area after i get greencard.

Default Raleigh

North Carolina is a beautiful state and a very good place to raise a family. However, it depends on what type of person you are and what you like. If you are looking for the big city environment, NC probably is not the right place for you.

I grew up in a very crowded city and was tired of it. After moving into the U.S., I lived in a small city in Virginia and those years in VA were the best years of my life. Later, I had to move into another big city that I still hate. Here, I have to spend at least 2 hours everyday in traffic, pay about double for housing than I was paying in VA, rude people (nobody cares about you like any big city), high crime rates etc.

I go to Raleigh, NC every year and spend couple of weeks with some of my old friends who have been living up there and love it. NC is beautiful - it's green, quiet, freeways are not crowded, housing prices are affordable, people are nice, almost no traffic, good schools... it's just a great place to live.

As someone else said on this forum, I will try to move into NC once I get my green card.

Default Rtp

I attended graduate school in the Research Triangle Area, and worked at a start-up there for about 2 yrs before moving to southern california.

Pros: As many have already mentioned, uncrowded, affordable housing, very green etc

Cons: I found that jobs are not as diversified as in Bay area or southern California - they are concentrated in specific areas such as Telecom and biotech, as someone already mentioned. I had to move out since my old employer was about the only one working in my specialization in that area. If you are at a stage in your career where you are not settled and looking for options when it comes to switching jobs (both technology area and H1/GC sponsorship), it is probably not as good a choice as some other technology hubs.
