kkr123, thanks for the information. Really appreciate it.

one last clarification - we submit applications in duplicate. Do we also have to send 2 copied of evidence documents (2 copies of passport, 2 copies of utility bill etc)?

TIA

Default For State PA, birth certificates should not be copied or reproduced

Hi All,

I am in same boat, I need to apply for PIO card to my daughter and got all documents and submitting all notarized copies.
Where as I tried to get the notary for birth certificate, two notary people rejected to do that as PA state will not allow to take copies of birth certificates.
What should I do here, do I have to send the original birth certificate with PIO application?

Thanks inadvance to your response.

kkr123, thanks a lot! I also received PIO card recently for my daughter. Thanks!

notary won't notarize any particular document; that's just what a notary is supposed to do. I write a letter addressing a consulate listing all the documents and mentioned that these documents are correct per my knowledge; and got that page (listing all documents) notarized from notary. Notary is not supposed to notarize all passport, birth certificate and bunch of documents. If any of the documents is wrong, then who is responsible. Hence, they only notarize that "person X came to my office, presented ID and signed the particular documents in front of me and I have verified the person & signature"... if u find someone who notarizes all document, then that's great!

We got it done in a bank. Most of the banks have notary service. I think we went to Bank of America. You need to tell them to notarize it as a copy. You need to take originals - they took the copies by themselves to be aboslotely sure and notarized it as a copy. They didn't notarize the copies we took. Try one of your local banks. Good Luck.

The SFO Indian Consulate requires the Original Birth Certificate of the applicants--not sure about other Consulates.

OP,

Was wondering how you are still holding on to your Indian passport when you already have a US one. You are required to surrender it after you get naturalized. I hope you have done that.

Inskrish: Do they retain it or just verify it and give it back there itself?
Do they take original PP as well? How long did it take to get the PIO cart from SFO Consulate? Any idea?

Hi,

The SFO Indian Consulate returns the original Birth Certificate and all original Passports to the applicants, and it takes about 10 business days to get the PIO card. All the best!

Send original birth certificate, it costs you about $15, but it is worth. Put a sticky note on top of it or in your cover letter say "Original Birth Certificate" attached.

You will not (or may not) receive it back, but it is worth trying.

my pio card finally came. actually, ups attempted delivering it before i went to india in march. because a signature was required in person, they would not leave it at the door, and they would not allow me to sign the info-notice requesting they just leave it at the door.

i didn't know what the package was (had no idea it was from the indian embassy), so i wasn't too concerned. my wife received it while i was in india.

so the turn-around time was pretty fast. actually, it was issued on march 9th. i'm not sure why they waited until the week of march 22nd to send it.

anywho, glad to have this done!

Default My experience with PIO card for my son

This is at Chicago consulate for my 6month old. Sent the application by mail. Sent all the notarized copies of required documents. The bank will not notarize the copy. They notarize your statement with signature. I wrote a statement on each copy that it is a true copy and they notarized my signature. Did not send original US passport. But sent the original birth certificate. Hey you can get them as many you want. Received PIO card in about two weeks. And now he is ready to fly to india .
