Default OPT 90 Days Almost Finished Still Unemployed

Hi All,

My best friend has been on OPT since Feb 1st, 2009. He is still unemployed. His 90 day deadline, including grace period is May 12th, 2009. Please help, is there anyway he can extend his stay? He did his Masters in Computer Science, if he has to volunteer for a job should that be related to Computer Science only? Please help! Any way that he can stay for a little longer may be for another month?

Please suggest.. Thanks for all your advices.

my 2 cents,

This recession is one of the worst one. Unemployment is increasing everyday. Tell your friend don't limit himself of finding a job only in US. Try all other countries too. I think H1b quota is not filled yet. Keep on trying for a job in US, canada and Europe.

FYI, the job you need to take during your OPT and to keep your status alive doesn't have to be a paid gig, You need to show you're not unemployed, but it doesn't mean you need to be on a paid job.

He can take up unpaid internships, which will suffice the requirement. Let me know if you need any directions...

Hi ,

Don't worry couple of my friends are in the same situation ,but they got their OPT extension also (For 17 Months).

They got letter from some DESI company's stating that they are working as an INTERN( Training, etc in the related field) .

Submit that letter to the international office in the school ,so that they can update the status .

They are still Unemployed for years.
