Default How to avoid being out of status with J1 visa

i was an opt for one year and one week ago I received a J1 visa at a research institution. However, my boss decided to terminate my appointment by December 31. I am looking for jobs but wont' be able to get an offer until late february or march.
Is there something I can to to mantain my J1 status beyond Dec 31st?.
Would a 2 months un paid vacation solve my problem or a leave of absence?
If not, how serious would be to be out of status for a few months?.
Any suggestions?
