Default If the I-485 is denied, what is the next step?

We had the initial I-485 AOS interview yesterday. It was based on marriage to USC. We did not bring enough supporting evidence, so the AO printed us a letter that said that a decision will be made within 180 days via mail from USCIS.

If my 485 is denied, then my status will be illegal. Should I leave the country rather than face removal proceedings?

If you are really married to a US Citizen, you shouldnot have any problems in providing supporting evidence. So don't worry.
If they send you an RFE, respond back with appropriate evidence.
If they deny, open a MTR and submit relevant supporting documents.
