It may not seem so by my PD, but it was a long time coming! Came to USA in Jan 1996! I went into research initially, and did not apply for GC at that time - because I thought it was not fair when I did not want to continue in research! I was naive and did not understand the process at all! Besides, I felt I would be exploited by my boss who was a foul-mouthed tyrant!

Anyway, could not apply during residency - not allowed! Then, not allowed to do so during first 3 years of waiver-job!

The first time I faced the vagaries of life in the US was after 9/11 - a Federal Program for J-1 waiver was abruptly cancelled after they gave me a waiver case number in Feb 2002! That led to having to wait for 8 months, when my status was legal - but could not work at all! Burnt through our savings, and lucky to have good credit - so able to survive on credit cards/ selling car, etc!

Had I been able to join my waiver job in-time - I would have beaten the retrogression and would have made home sooner!

Missed July 2007 filing because I was waiting for my PERM at a new job, and my lawyer advised me to play absolutely straight! Cost $20K to switch to new job - but had to do it for family! Anyway, my previous employer was not keen to write a letter just for the heck of it - I would not have ever gone back to them anyway!

I was fortunate to be a lot more active with IV in the initial days! Waldenpond, logiclife, berkeleybee, and several others - it was great to be able to contribute with you guys at that time! I happened to be the lucky conduit for IV's initial legislative efforts - the credit was all due to several members of the Core group, especially Waldenpond & logiclife!

pappu, and others seem to be carrying it very well! Paskal is doing a tremendous job amongst my colleagues!

The last 3 years have been very difficult, especially hardest have been the last month or so! It is the uncertainty and the unfairness of the process that is unbearable!

But, I can finally say with confidence - there is a light at the end of the tunnel! God Bless you all! Wish you all the best!
Greatly deserving and kudos for hanging in there despite the troubles.. Enjoy your freedom

- cheers
kris
