True. GC is a career killer. Whether you spend time waiting for it or spend time ignoring it and move ahead with your H1B status.
It is impossible to plan a life and career without factoring in the greencard. Even if you ignore GC application and jump jobs for career growth, there will be no way ahead in US when 6 years are up. At that time, there is no option but regret not applying for a green card on time. Also consider the precarious situation on H1B status if one gets laid off. In this bad economy being on H1B is tough as there is always a fear of being out of status.

Now I have EAD but cannot use it. I have to maintain H1-b status for supporting H4.

Filing Dependent 485 requries the priority date of the Primary to be current.

I wish there is an interim relief to allow dependent 485 (or for that matter all 485's) to be filed if primary I-40 has been approved for more than X months or years and the person has maintained valid status....
Being on EAD does not invalidate your H1 status. please check with an attorney

It can happen, not very near future but possitilies are there FY 2011 - 2012 for EB2.

They will not make it current but atleast big movement (which could be temporary in nature)

Why would/should it happen ?.
In july 2007 after tons of 485 being filed and much being already processed, USCIS is able to accurately move dates based on alloted country quota , plus (this is important) they are able to further move dates to utilize spill over (as they have pre-approved cases).
note: EB2 I & C get big spillovers.
Once they are done with these cases (july/2007) then they will not have any preapproved cases to use the spill overs, and they cannot at the end-of the year move dates just like that to use the spill overs (bcoz 485 needs processing time which is couple of months)

Got it!!! ??? i feel at some point of time they should/would have to move dates way ahead or they would lose spillover numbers

Hope my reasoning is correct.
