Green Card = legal quicksand

Masters from US - 2 years
All taxes paid - 7 years
Green Card wait - ????
For everything else, there's USCIS

Legal but still suffering

slogan: Does anyone know when I will get my green card?

someone wrote this slogan in another thread as a title of the thread. I thought it was nice.

reedandbamboo 07-31-2007 02:00 AM

To counter image of H1Bs as non-tax payers ..
Legal immigrants are NOT freeloaders!!

We pay taxes too!!

reedandbamboo 07-31-2007 02:05 AM

To protest per-country limits for EB categories ..
The face of America <a graphic showing multiple nationalities>

The face of legal immigrants <same graphic as above showing all nationalities>

Then why impose country-based limits for skilled immigrants??

sundarpn 07-31-2007 03:03 AM

there should be a good number of slogans that explicitly mention IV's purpose.

1. EB / Skilled worker backlog reduction (faster processing in all stages of GC)
2. Exclude dependents in use of visa number.
3. remove quotas based on country of birth.

A few Quote's
Here are a few quote's

• I am a highly skilled legal immigrant. Why am I not treated fairly?
• 250,000 Green cards were not used during the past 10 years. We have 500,000 highly skilled legal immigrants waiting in line to get one. Do we have an easy fix here?
• We are Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, Attorney’s, Nurses, Physical Therapists, IT professionals. When does our probationary status end?
• I have been in US legally for 10 years. I contribute to the economy, pay my taxes and my kids are US citizens. How many more years before I am granted a Green card?
• I have been in the Green Card Queue for 5 years. How many more do I have to go?
• I am a hard working highly skilled legal immigrant. Why does my Green card take 6 – 12 years to get processed?
• I get promoted when I work hard but why I am bumped back in the Green Card Queue?

santb1975 07-31-2007 03:45 AM

A couple more quotes
• There was no country cap when I was given my temporary work visa. Why is there a country cap for my permanent Immigration Visa?
• My family and I used one Visa number for a temporary work visa. Why are each of us using a visa number for a permanent immigration visa?

sve0390 07-31-2007 03:56 AM

How about these?
Innovation ~ 1/(wait Time)^2

Enterprise = GC^2

I have these as small JPEGs (7KB and 8KB), but cannot upload as attachments. Any ideas why I can't upload these?

franklin 07-31-2007 05:13 AM

Keep em coming!
The very best ones (most visibility at the font size we will print them) are Short and Snappy - I'm talking 5 or 6 words. We'll also be including a larger size for the website URL which takes up more real estate on the banners.

The shorter the phrase, the larger it can be printed, the more visible it'll be amongst the seas of grinning peaceful protesters on Sept 13th that'll be in the Washington Post and on CNN :D

Some of the good ones from SJ (and a good examples of length) were:-

"Legally Blind" Immigration System
God Bless US(CIS)
Highly Skilled or Highly Stressed?
We Respect the Law, Respect US back!
Justice for Legal Immigrants!

You get the drift - lets channel the collective energy going on here!

Snuk 07-31-2007 10:52 AM

Is my American Dream down the Drain?

mantagon 07-31-2007 12:18 PM

Some more...
- Immigration or Frustration?

- GREEN Card or GRIEF Card?

- To get GREEN, should we go thru' GRIEF?

- UNUSED Wireless Minutes Carried Over, Why not UNUSED VISA NUMBERS?

american_dreams 07-31-2007 12:20 PM

Congress, every ONE of you is an immigrant.
What are you afraid of now?

sparky123 07-31-2007 12:21 PM

unused or unissued?
I feel the visa numbers were 'unissued' due to the backlog at USCIS and not were really 'unused' (which means there was no demand).

Any phrase to highlight this?

american_dreams 07-31-2007 01:12 PM

Uncle Sam why discriminate based on the country of birth?
I was never given a choice to decide where i can be born.

pictures for the rally
How about some catchy pictures
Like... highly skilled workers dressed in suites, whitecoats waiting in line with years displaying besides them for GCs, money paid in taxes displayed besides them and a man from USCIS showing his back on us, and in a little distance a senator closing his ears with his hand and blind folded... etc

vrkanti 07-31-2007 01:23 PM

We have 8 pages of slogans now. Is someone keeping track of the one getting selected for the rally?

If core can post the one's they think are appropriate, I think that will give us some guidance to our intutitive brains ;) to come up with more catch slogans in the right direction.

american_dreams 07-31-2007 01:30 PM

I am playing the GC game abiding your laws.
I do not know of any other game that takes more than 10 years and i am still not happy.

santb1975 07-31-2007 01:30 PM

Will work on more slogans tonight
Alright Franklin, I can shorten the ones I came with tonight but I thought we should still showcase how easy legal immigrants issues are to fix. I will work on some more

jfredr 07-31-2007 01:37 PM

DC bless Legals with GC
DC bless Legals with GC

Dont't kill Skilled without GC

perm2gc 07-31-2007 01:37 PM

We can calculate complex technological problems but not green card waiting time :D

ayyo1234 07-31-2007 01:43 PM

STOP outsourcing ? WHY ?

Many people are suggesting banners with "Give GC and STOP outsourcing"

I don't see it different from American Citizens saying Stop issueing green cards or for that matter even H1-Bs. There are many skilled people are working in different countries who benefit from outsourcing..I think we shouldn't bring out sourcing issue here ...

For me its like, saying stop H1-B after getting your GC...

Like many of you I struggled thru my GC process and got it after 5 years...

I would say, we should "mention" issues like
- Taxes we paid
- Number of years we have been waiting in line
- Job restrcutions
- Wife H4 status ( can't work)
- Problem with aging kids
- Can't plan future
etc etc
