View Full Version : GC in hand now what?

All these years I had an easy excuse for not being able to start anything and now that excuse is no more their. Now that most of us have GC in hand ... now what??

I am tired of showing up at the same dead end job. No kidding Friday is day of excitment for me and Sunday evening is mourning time. Reminds me of my school days (pre 12th grade). I got to admit since job is paying for bills, I cannot just kick it away. Especially when you are living in Detroit area, where jobs are like dinosaures.

Anyhow, couple of months ago some of IV's started yahoo group. But it soon evolved into business plan writting contest, so I was out. The point missing was the fact that you need to have business idea before business plan can be hashed. But I assume someone did benefit and proceeding ahead, otherwise what a waste.

So if you are still hanging around and reading this post, I guess you know what I mean.;)

Cmon man. you got freaking nerve to ask this question on this site. You know how many of us got stucked in this waiting and what is the impact of this long wait on everybody's life. It is life winning lottery and standing in front of trailer park and yelling , what to do with all this money.please help me. I know his language is not right but i am sure many amongst us share same sentiment.

Of all the posts that were out there, for "some" reason this is the one that really caught my attention.
Come on guys, some of you are yelling at this poor guy. He/she is in a desperate situation.
He/she has a GC and is now confused about what to do. You will also notice that he/she has a job in a job scarce place like Detroit and is confused about that too. How much desperate an individual can be and we guys (atleast some of us) are bashing this person?? Now pretty soon he/she will start a business and............ OH yeah....then what??? So will we bash him/her then too?? Show some pity to this poor discontent soul. All that is being sought for in this initial post is a bit of compasion and pity. We should be willing to donate that. Remember that he/she is also well poised to come to your door step and kick some part of the body denoted by the code ###. so we have to take that too into consideration too.
Anyway the bottom line is "some souls are always destined to be happy and they spread that wherever they go". I chose not to say the opposite.
Best of luck on your business (whenever you start that) and then???

IV is for people waiting for GC. People with GC are hated!
People really envy person who got GC and is asking a question.
Please suggest if I am wrong with example.

Dude;

You are preaching the choir ... I didn't get in a year. I got it after 5+ yrs ... now you may complain it's still shorter than what you had or are waiting. Sorry I couldn't be of any help. But when some people like the one in my previous post replied in un-called way, I know how to shove my boot up their a$$.

On other hand you, my dear had very reasonably explained your sentiments. But trust me, in no-way had I stopped ur getting GC. As a matter of fact, I never bought labor or used other tricks like labor substitution, EB3 to EB2 or 1 to jump ahead of the line. Mine was the probably best to the "textbook" case. And if I could get GC from USCIS's murky way of processing, than so can you. If you don't see it this way, than it is your problem, in no-way am I flaunting my GC at ur face. I am merely expressing my thoughts at post GC level for like minded people to discuss.

Hope this soothes ur feeling.

Congratulations on getting your GC.

I think after all these years of struggle for getting the GC, the last breath of motivation is gone. The same energy to start a business or do what ever is not there anymore. Life suddenly feels empty, boring, dont-know-where-to-start feeling......

I would suggest to you, to take a vacation to countries that you have never visited...or do something that really would give you great happiness and pride. By doing so, you would reset your mind and good ideas would follow on how to make $$$$.

Good Luck!!!

Thats what I will probably do. Just take off for a vacation on a cruise which I long dream of with family and kids. A quiet sailing around the carribeans so that I can just re-enter peacefully and re-energize my self to throw away all the frustrations of waiting for a GC. Once that is done, your mind will surely come up with some refreshing ideas/concepts and you will be recharged and proceed after those ideas/concepts.

Good luck and congratulations on your GC.

BECsufferer,

Your had a very genuine question. But, you know how people here are. After I got my GC, I asked a question regarding immigration law: whether it is mandatory to carry GC with me all the time.....I was butchered for that. I was told to shove my gc up my ass, tattoo it on my back, hang it around my neck and more.

For some (minority) in this forum you are a friend until you suffer and once you stop suffering, you become the object of hatred. People (again minority) are too upset, too angry and mentally disturbed and they have all the justification to be so ......... but they are, I guess, not civilized to control their emotions.

Anyways, if you have some money and want to invest or start your own venture, best thing I would suggest is to network with people that are accomplished in the area of your interest. That is a good starting point. You might even find someone who is looking for a partner.

We want to build a strong community of immigrants. It is not just people waiting for greencards. People who have greencards can continue to help and support this organization.
People who got Greencards are welcome to work on provisions that can help them like - Counting citizenship wait time from the date of I140 approval. IV will provide support.

If anyone is being rude or not following forum rules, report to the moderators. Each one of us need to be responsible and mature in our postings. Immature posts reflect badly on the organization we all belong to.

I don't know what business plan writing contest you are talking about. Before anything needs to be done we need a plan, and several ideas are thrown around. We did something concrete like setting up appointments with congressmen, and meeting with them at their offices. I don't think I have met you at all. If you've been lurking in the shadows, and just listening to all the conversation...shame on you. You did not show the courage, or leadership to come out, and voice you opinions or concerns. Let alone doing anything. Now that you have your GC you want to open up your big mouth. Sorry to say but I don't ever see you becoming an entrepreneur...you'll just be following the crowd, and remain a free-rider always. Good luck anyways!!

I can see where you are going with this. Waiting for GC for 5-6 years takes a certain amount of toll. Add to those 5-6 years a few years before starting the GC process. You are essentially looking at 8-10 years on H1 status. Once you have been in limbo for a third of your life it is very hard to break out and start a new position/business.

But I think this is a personal battle you have to fight yourself. You have to go thru a thorough introspection of what you want out of your life now that GC is not your excuse/priority. Is it money or family? Is it just that you dislike your current job or do you dislike the corporate culture? Do you dislike the industry you are in? Do you like the job but it is dead-end?

In the end, you will have to make some hard decisions. You might have to switch jobs, move to a different place, start a new business. In essence, you will have to learn to fail.
GC process makes you so cautious that you can't fail at any step. So you become super risk averse. You will have to go thru a journey to find out what you want and then take a chance.

I can share some experiences if you PM me. Good luck.

He is your true friend. He gave you courageous much needed reply that will open your closes business holes in your mind. He knew you will reply badly even he showed the courage. Any way in business you need to have similar skills. If you follow him you will realize later once you are in business, how important this tip is. Once you find him give him a warm hug. There no quota system in doing business you need to be practical.
Always remember you can achieve anything by proper use of mind and hard work but when bad time comes one loose the control on mind and don’t get the proper environment for hard work. Bad time comes from multiple ways together.
Consult a CPA and Thank God for every small thing. You are good person by heart but that's not how business runs.
Good Luck

Never forget IV even if you got your GC. You shouldn't be surprised why people visit after getting GC; for example my own brothers are still in waiting, though I got mine last month. well, although one feels releived a lot. after one gets journey did not end, just another session started,

Hello,

OP has an interesting question that may hanut many of us once we get the GC. As somegcuh pointed out, it may create a thinking vacuum (i.e. no looking up Case status daily, no PoJ calls, no rush to lookup latest visa bulletin, no daily/hourly visits to various forums and so on). It's almost like retirement! What do I do now that I'm retired?

As I've seen with my friends w GC, life doesn't change much with GC. What changes life is our individual efforts (with or without GC) and goals.

PS: Anyways, a nice vacation is always a good 'to-do' after getting GC, I guess? ;)

Serious but still very funny reply. Particularly the segment about "feeling like retired". You are absolutely right. I met a friend recently who got greened and now he cannot sleep due to fear of being layed off. Living in the US without a decent job is the mose terrifying aspect I guess. Anyway best of luck to those who are feeling retired with a green card in hand.

Sooner or later many of us will find ourselves at the same crossroads in life. It's easy to say "What? Me? No way! Never! I'm way too smarter than that... ". But after you realize that the best years of your life have passed you by in the hopeless chase of a green card, when you do finally get it your mojo to go out and rule the world simply isn't there any more. The creativity is gone. And so has the inspiration.

Yes, you've been assimilated to a certain way of life! You exist, but don't live. And unfortunately the ideas that make a Twitter or a Facebook or a YouTube simply don't seem to be making that connection with your brains any more.

That's when you ask yourself. I"ve got this green card. What next?

Sounds like an excellent theme for a feature film. Any volunteers? Budding scriptwriters? :)

OK - back to your sand castles and believing green card is the holy grail. :)

Yes sir, You must reside in US for 6 months in a year to maintain GC and without job one could do the math. With the cost of flying one would stay in US if he were to loose job!!
