Hello,
It is my understanding that if one marries a us citizen, they can stay in the country but cannot work until they get an EAD. I've also heard otherwise that one can begin working as soon as he or she gets married as long as the I-765 is filed even though it may not be approved yet. Is this true?

You are absolutely correct!!. No EAD and SSN, you cannot work period. I-765 only gives right to stay legally in the country but for work you need to have EAD/GC in hand.
