Dear Friends,

As you may know, the Senate is currently drafting a major immigration reform bill right now and we are actively working on the provisions that would help us get our visa bulletin dates current by solving the backlogs and retrogression issues thru the immigration bill. There is also additional development on high-skills immigration bill. The bill for removing per-country ceilings H.R. 3012 that passed the House in 2011 with 97% majority and almost passed the Senate last year has been re-introduced in the new Congress as H.R. 633 (http://chaffetz.house.gov/press-release/chaffetz-introduces-common-sense-bill-toward-fixing-legal-immigration). This is a strong indication that our issue is still on the fore-front of high-skills immigration issues. Read more and discuss (http://immigrationvoice.org/forum/forum16-iv-agenda-and-legislative-updates/3094646-fairness-for-high-skilled-immigration-we-applaud-rep-chaffetz-lofgren-and-labrador.html#post3568179). Read the H.R. 633 Press Release (http://chaffetz.house.gov/press-release/chaffetz-introduces-common-sense-bill-toward-fixing-legal-immigration).

We applaud the Rep. Jason Chaffetz, Rep Lofgren and Rep Labrador for introducing Fairness for High-Skilled Immigration Act Ė H.R. 633.

In order to make sure that our provisions including the per-country ceiling removal and other measures are included in the Immigration Bill of 2013, we need all of you to step up and help us do it. IV core team cannot do this alone. We need your help. We urgently need to focus on 2 action items.

Register for DC advocacy event on March 17 - 19 (http://immigrationvoice.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=80). Make travel plans in advance and join your fellow IV members in actual advocacy efforts to lobby congress to include our high skills immigration provisions. You can be a part of history-making and have the satisfaction of doing something for yourself and your family.

Secondly, as you may know, we have paid advocacy efforts also going on in DC and we receive professional help and counsel from lobbyists. In order to keep those efforts well-funded during this effort, we need your help to pitch in and make donations (http://immigrationvoice.org/forum/misc.php?do=donate). You can see the wonderful work being done yourself if you attend our event in DC on March 17-19.

Please do not assume that the legal immigration problem will be solved automatically when the 2013 immigration bill passes. We have to ensure that we are not forgotten. Comprehensive bills are too big and there are many more sensitive issues and if we are not careful, we will be left behind. Already we have the last DOS visa bulletin indicate that EB2 dates may not move forward at all between now and September. So letís be active and letís be careful and not miss this opportunity.

See you in Washington, D.C. on 17th - 19th March!

What is Advocacy Days?

Advocacy Days does not involve rallies or protest on the streets. Instead Advocacy Days involve working collaboratively with the office of the Members of Congress in meeting format. This is more of the meeting in which you explain issues affecting you and the community. Members of Congress are not fully aware of our issues, which is why events such as - Advocacy Days - is needed to create awareness on our issues. Members of Congress want to listen and learn about the hardships faced by immigrants, they want to fix the broken system. The question is, are you willing to step up to make your voice count and actively participate to make the difference.

Why is this 3 day event?

The way we organize advocacy days is - we ask that you arrive in Washington, D.C. either on the 16th night or 17th March early morning. Whole day on 17th March, we will go over how to tell your unedited personal story effectively. You may think you know everything about advocacy, but the fact is, if you have not been to meeting with your representatives in the past, chances are you will not be able to make the best out of the face time with the Congressional offices. That is why attending this training is very very important and mandatory for effective and successful advocacy meetings so that you could articulate the issue, problems and solutions/recommendations to fix the system.

Have you done Advocacy Days before?

We have conducted over 10 advocacy days till now. Due to various reason, many of these events were not unannounced on the forum. Each Advocacy event involves constituents coming in from across the country, as far as Alaska and Hawaii, representing each State/district. Most Advocacy days are attended by around 100 members in which members go to between 100 to 450 Congressional meetings in two days, explain our issues and providing meaningful suggestions to fix the systematic problem with the system.

How many meetings will I go to?

After all day training on the 17th March, your entire day on 18th and 19th March will be packed with Congressional meetings. You will be going to Congressional meetings in small groups with others attending the Advocacy days from your State/other States.

How many IV members are you expecting in this Advocacy Days? Who has already signed up?

We are planning on conducting around 200 meetings in 2 days. So we would like no more than 125-150 members to attend this event. If you can imagine, scheduling 200 Congressional meetings, matching with the schedule of 150 different people coming in and leaving from out of town, making sure everyone is comfortable and well placed, it's a complex task to plan and execute such an event. Which is why, we prefer no more than 125-150 members. The question is, are you willing to step up to make your voice count and actively participate to make the difference.

Some of the IV members who have already signed up include PHDs, Medical doctors, employees to large tech companies, university professors etc. We would like to invite everyone who aligns with our stated goals of elimination of EB backlogs.

What are you supposed to do to be part of Advocacy days? What Do I need to do in advance?

You do not have to do anything in advance. If you have the burning desire to stand-up for you and your family, to speak up and have your voice heard in a democratic process, have lawmakers listen to your issues so that there could be a meaningful reform, then this is your chance to make a difference.

Just sign-up and show up on time. We will setup meetings with Senate offices and specific House offices for you. When you arrive, we will hand you your meeting schedule, training material, advocacy folders for each office, provide you with specific training on how to meaningfully and effectively communicate your personal story, plus we will go over how to explain our problems and issues when you go for the meetings with Congressional Offices.

Sign-up for the Advocacy days here (http://immigrationvoice.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=80)

I've Secret clearance required for my job, will attending Advocacy Days affect my clearance?

Speaking-up and making your voice heard in a civilized manner is the most American thing. In Advocacy events, we are meeting with Congressional offices to tell our stories and recommend solutions based on how things work on the ground. There is nothing wrong with participating in Advocacy days. In fact, at the meeting you could probably end up getting picture with your Senator or Member of Congress. None of this should negatively affect your security clearance of any other part of your job or immigration process.

When I try to use option to sign up for monthly contribution, message comes up stating that you will be forwarded to paypal, but after that nothing comes up. I also tried to select one time contribution and that link takes me to a page which provides information about Smileys :)

I would like to sign up for monthly contribution and also planning to come to DC.

Folks -

- Please try to register (http://immigrationvoice.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=80) for the March 2013 IV advocacy event as soon as you can. This is a huge event and opportunity for us to complement IV's ongoing advocacy efforts in DC. IV Core and our advocacy team is having meetings on a weekly basis and this will be re-inforced by constituents like you (from all across the nation) pushing for our provisions at the meetings in March.
- Your registering early will help volunteers with logistics and scheduling. Help us help you.
- IV has held 4 advocacy events in the past 2 years (only one was publicly announced). Every one of the 100+ participants in each of those events will tell you this is an event and opportunity that should not be missed. Make sure your/our voice is heard on Capitol Hill and our wait finally ends.
- Spread the message among your friends and encourage them to contribute. We are relying on your contributions to make this event a great success. You will see when you come to the event that a great deal of logistics, planning and expenditure goes into hosting it. Any help is appreciated

Thanks,
Team IV

Dear Fellow IV members

I agree with Pappu, if we are unable to attend the meeting at-least we can do is contribute. I registered today however I was contributing to IV through paypal payments using my friends account. I sincerely thank every member of this organization for lending their time and extraordinary efforts to bring relief to EB backlogs.

I am contributing $300 today as I am not able to attend. I know this is very small contribution, however I feel every penny counts.

So my contribution this time would be monetary.

Made one time transfer of 200usd. Transaction ID: 4L686298VD713615T
As well signing up for 50 usd per month for the next 6 months. Will renew as required in future.

Kudos to you for signing up for the advocacy event. Look forward to working with you for the meetings on Capitol Hill on March 18-19.

If there is anyone who is helped the most by removal of EB GC backlogs, it is folks like you who are yet to get in the GC queue. Our goal as an organization is to remove these backlogs once and for all, especially for new entrants to the GC process..so that you do not have to go through the 10-20 year wait times like the rest of us have had to endure. We are glad you are joining us for the meetings. As mentioned above, look forward to working more on high-skilled immigration reform advocacy, with new and dedicated members like you.

Hi folks,
As we near the advocacy event, we are trying to coordinate and help members who are travelling from across the country to DC.

- If you are looking for someone to share a hotel room with and want to be connected with another person in the same boat please email hotelsharing.iv.march2013@gmail.com.
Folks living in the DC,MD,VA area who are willing to host visiting IV members are also welcome to send an email to the above email id. Your help is much appreciated.

- If you wish to donate flight miles or are a participant flying in to DC and would like to get connected to a miles donor, please email miles.march2013.advocacy@gmail.com . We will connect the airline miles donor and requested recipient and you can take it from there.
(deepakd I think gujju already has your info).

Can I have your phone#? I would like to go to the event but as I'm going to India on May, I could make use of the miles which you are willing to donate. By the way, can those miles be used for Airtran as Southwest have any service in Wichita,KS.
Thanks in advance.
Govind

I may be there. Can't confirm right now :-(
I have been saving miles for vacation and if I recall correctly I have more than 50,000 miles in southwest which I'd like to donate. I'd also make cash donation.
Questions:
1) Can I donate miles ?
2) if Yes then how ?
3) Can any admin please contact me to help me out ?

Thanks

On behalf of all Indians I am proud of IV to have taken up this extremely important cause! kudos to all of you guys!
I must say this is really a glittering ray of hope for all the women out there who have had to spend endless days lazing in the house with the only relief being that of shopping a couple of times a week and travelling with the husbands a few times a month. Its an answer to our frustrations of not having to work and settling for high teas, potlucks, baby showers or skype back in the country- as the only other means of fun and socializing.

The results of your efforts so far, are truly encouraging! however there is still a lot to do and everybody who feels even a little bit for fellow citizens of our country and its current state of affairs should promptly heed this call of help. I would like to urge all Indians who can afford just about 2 meals per day and are educated enough to use the internet to read about the efforts you guys have taken.
I can only think of the Anna Hazare movement or the more recent, Nirbhaya movement in Delhi, to be comparable to this revolutionary movement to fight against this issue facing us today.
Let us join hands in making all of 'us' proud!

it is great to see these young turks step up to the plate where many of us old dogs have not...kinda reminds me of the oscars when the 9yr old girl was in the running for best actress :-)

on a more serious note, how are the advocacy day events going? any chance we can get a provision in to reduce the citizenship waiting time for long waiting legal immigrants (waiting for GC) similar to the way illegal immigrants are being told they will need to wait etended periods of time before filing their GC?

I know IV has enough trouble fighting for just the per-country provisions, but just thowing this out there since this was popular in the past and may help us forge common grounds with other advocacy organizations...

This idea is not our agenda. We have responded a few times in the past and given reasons why. There is nobody working on this idea and if someone tells you they are working they are not speaking the truth.

You have joined today. Spend some time understanding advocacy process. Go and meet your local offices in person , volunteer your time to IV and you will know the grand canyon like gap between posting an idea on forum and implementing it. Getting any bill passed for an idea is another big Grand Canyon. We folks spend time on forums, read posts , send spam emails, sign online petitions and think advocacy is too easy. The reality is very different.

thanks for that update pappu, I saw the below link from ny times in the other thread :

https://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/18/us/politics/senate-groups-immigration-plan-would-alter-waiting-periods.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

it talks of reducing the citizenship waiting time to 3 from 5 years. should be a good thing if it happens.

Cheers
