Hi, I am on a 7th year H1B working at a non-profit. I have an approved NIW I140 and am past 180 days of my I485 filing. I have received my EAD/AP card. I have two questions:

1. I am wondering if I can take small paid jobs at a university outside of my H1B institution while being on my H1B. If not, then what is the process to go on my EAD card - i.e., what should I tell my current employer?

2. Do I have to pay for renewing EAD card? I seem to recall that there was no charge to renew EADs but I am unable to verify that now.

I will appreciate any help.

Thanks!

1. If you use EAD for any job, even part time, you must use EAD for all jobs. So, for your primary employer, you need to file a new I-9 showing EAD

2. You do not need to pay for EAD if you applied for 485 after July 2007

I did apply for I485 after 2007 so I am good there.

How can I evaluate the risks of leaving h1b to be on the EAD? BTW, once on EAD, can I be unemployed? I am guessing yes because my I485 is tied to my I140 which is not employer based b/c it is NIW. Sorry, it has been so long waiting for the green card that my brain is rusty with this stuff.

Also, does filing I9 with my employer itself constitute abandoning my H1B?
