Pappu ,

Is Senate going towards CIR ( aka amnesty for illegals ) via this hearing ? Or is this only for legal immigration.

FYI. for IV members.

Below is the press release being released by IV to the media. This will go out to hundreds of reporters and publications with immediate effect.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 25, 2011
Immigration Voice

Immigration Voice invited to U.S Senate hearing to testify on high-skilled immigration

The high-skilled immigration system in the U.S is outdated and broken. This is evident from the backlog of up to a million applicants that currently exists in the employment-based green card queue. It does not make any sense for the current system to take up to a decade or more to grant green cards to some of the best and brightest in the world, who have chosen America as their future home.

Immigration Voice, a 501(4)c non-profit organization, has single-handedly acted as the collective voice of thousands of high-skilled immigrants and their families who are stuck in this green card limbo. As a result of persistent advocacy and grass-roots efforts, this volunteer-driven organization has been successful in creating awareness among U.S lawmakers, on the issue of green card backlogs and long wait times.

Dr.Puneet Arora, from Immigration Voice, has been invited to testfy at a Senate Immigration Sub-committee hearing on July 26th, 2011 at 10:00 AM ET. Dr.Arora will be joined on the panel by Mr.Robert Greifeld - NASDAQ, Dr.David J.Skorton – Cornell University and Mr.Brad Smith – Senior Vice-President, Microsoft.

Great Job Puneet and IV!!

I don't see what's wrong with Ron's perspective of closing loopholes in the guestworker programs? Wage determination - How many of us have their wages as 50k while the actual market rate is 90k?? Mobility to change jobs during H-1B?? Greencard backlogs??

Agreed some of his views are extreme but also do benefit us!!

Closing loopholes is something everyone wants. But, if you look at the background and do some research, you will find that Ron Hira has been consistently attacking Indian immigrants and Indian companies. He is using the minimal abuse of the loopholes in the system to portray a poor image on immigrants and uses such arguments consistently to blame the entire community.

In my opinion, we must not stop lottery and send those to highly skilled. That is just not right. Lottery actually is very helpful.

If everyone in the USA immigrate via highly skilled, there will be shortages in other areas. Skills are needed at all level.

Few years back, my baby sitter was an immigrant from Nepal who immigrated via the lottery. She was a high school teacher there and highly qualified, she was the best baby sitter I could ever get. Her family is full of cabbies, workers in vocational jobs etc, her daughter is a nurse and her son is trying to get into the Armed forces.

So a diversity is always welcome.

Family based must also not be stopped. Family ties are very important.

So the issues, that need to be addressed are backlogs in highly skilled and process streamlining and we must not mess with other types of immigration

I am confused which side Sen Session stands. He advocated High skill immigration reform, but not CIR. But then he sounded confrontative when questioning the Microsoft guy.

But again Sen Schumer mentioned he's for the CIR approach.

Great job IV. Wonderful and crisp testimony by Dr.Puneeth.
While the other panelists spoke in general about high skilled immigration, Dr.Puneeth's testimony clearly pointed out the fallacy of per-country caps and why it should go! Nice to see Brad Smith/Microsoft pick up on that in his follow-up and re-iterate that focus should be on reducing green card wait times!

great work Arora/IV!glad discrimination based on nationality or country of origin - which incidentally is explicitly outlawed in employment/other spheres-was highlighted!should be a simple first-in-first-out process without regard to anything else that was of no regard when the job was obtained, as simple as that!
I am glad anti-immigrant bigots got a chance to spew their venom too so everyone could see what they actually stand for. Hope they bring back the rabid xenophobes - oops, I mean 'an organization' advocating 'strict immigration' i.e CIS too back to the next hearing. Cant wait for them to make how unemployed blacks should actually be performing the jobs that go to illegal immigrants line!!

Not every, just more than a few recent immigrants/off-spring are anti-immigrant...there always have been anti-immig bigots all thru history but what is different about the current ones are the way they are sooo well organized from 'think' tanks spitting out 'scholarly' papers vilifying immigrants to media personalities singularly focussed on squelching even the slightest bit of perceived softness/decency in any legislation pertaining to immigrants. Can you imagine some research scholar whose job description includes digging out data and writing articles appealing to the basal instincts of insecure people frightening them abt immigrants who sometimes can't even read & have no clue they're the subject of such studies?!

First things first, I really would like to thank Puneet, Pappu and IV core members who are doing lot more than just posting messages on IV and wishing a miracle will happen. Not to come out negatively, but we all know hearings like this and bills like CIR have been happening routinely. I, for one, have given up on these ways. would there be any effect if we organized awareness meeting with a prominent and influential local/regional policy maker in pre-chosen districts ? Idea would be to gather representative ppl (eg. Dr. Puneet Mishra) who have telling stories to get our point across.

Guys, one request

While replying to anti's let's avoid the negative terms. In fact all we have to do is mark their remarks as spam, because most of them are unjustified and false. Using negative terms would just hurt us, and this is what they want. Give them the silent treatment

Take any article on CNN and look at the comments below. You rarely see rational discussion. Most of the stuff is pure junk and people spew venom like anything.

Post a nice Bollywood dance on YouTube and you will see people trash talking about the girl dancing as if it were his ex and he dumped her etc...

Don't take them too seriously. Trash talks and rants are most times fun to read. You never know that they maybe coming from your own co worker or people you may know.

From such comments it is obvious that there is inbuilt hatred and such feelings exist everywhere. This is not a "giving" world, it is a selfish "taking" world.

Everyone wants a piece of the cake and the whole cake if possible.

I would say, leave the comments open. If you react to the trash, you are basically sending a message that you are offended and they would love it.

Do we know or have a gist of what Sen. Chuck Schumer is thinking of high-skilled immigration reform after the hearing ?

I saw some article like this which doesn't sound favorable to us in the near term

Ha ha ha. Well, bullying is everywhere. The nice guys - like the dedicated IV members are soft targets.

Don't we always see that the good guy is the chosen target at workplaces for bullying? The one who helps others, the one who is smiling and kind is the one who gets targeted.

I don't think we must take these folks seriously.

However, I agree with smuggymba since the antis posting there were totally whacko and abusive and from their comments, it was clear they were not even reading any sensible stuff our folks were posting. So it was very pointless to argue there. It was taking away from the real focus which was the video and dr.arora's testimony...which was truly a great achievement.

On other editorials/articles where ppl post senseless stuff like "immigrants take away jobs and lower wages" and other similar myths...i agree that we should respond and clarify.

The IV leadership worked so hard for this day and these jobless racists sitting comfy on employment benefits are humiliating IV's achievements? Though broadly I tend to agree that fighting over youtube comments is playing into their hands.

I read Dr Puneeth's testimonial and it is so impressive. I am glad that there are people like him and many others at Immigration voice ( talented and exceptional professionals) who have chosen to speak up and fix a broken employment based immigration system here in USA. We need more people from the Indian and other communities to come forward and support social activism that aims at fixing the system and not just pray to get lucky and get out of the waiting line. I for one will continue to support such initiatives irrespective of my GC status till such time the system is fixed.

If someone is expecting a miracle out of a single event, it will be incorrect. Do not expect any bill coming out tomorrow because of this. This is only one event in the series of things we do and have been doing. It is just a big event in the many other events. This event should inspire each and every IV member to now go and personally meet his lawmakers in his state. And then keep meeting them every couple of months asking for updates what they have done to help the community. Unless our community takes initiative getting any relief will be tough. There is no backseat driving in advocacy. People need to come out of the anonymous virtual forum and take real life initiatives.

Can we make this an action item?
The video description should also have a link to immigration voice. It should not say IV but immigration voice. This social media sharing on Facebook will help get many more people aware of this effort and we can get a much larger support. Is it possible to count number of people that shared this link?
would you like to lead this small action item for the next few days?

The Hill blog by Puneet had an equal number of pro and anti immigrant comments and I think overall the pro folks did a great job of presenting facts without getting into a fist fight and kept their heads high.

We should copy ALL the pro comments from that blog and just paste it elsewhere. Yeah we cannot shut everyone up but it does make a difference to put facts out there and make our voices heard. Or else we will always be tagged as "job stealers" and "wage reducers".

I am not defending Infosys, but pls. don't fall prey to antis talking points. No company the size of infosys will deliberately flout the law. Sure, they may take it to the extreme and use loopholes, but that will be done by any corporation.

The issue that Mr. Palmer is talking about is not illegal at all. Pls. visit Mumbai consulate website where they list "B1 in lieu of H1" as a procedure. This is apparently approved by US state dept. I think in a nutshell, a worker can use B1 to perform H1 work if the time he will be in US is less than 3 months or so and if he is paid in the home country and everything is per diem in US. As long as there is no salary paid in US, I think they are eligible for this.

The requirements are the same too, similar to H1. This is a US govt procedure. Mr. Palmer is probably not aware of it or he is just looking out for a payday.

Now, I am not saying that Infosys or any other corporation, be in an Indian or an American, is a saint, but this is not a violation. Its all dog and pony show for the gullible public.

This is similar to many other claims by the antis. Antis often refer to the recent GAO report that there is a fraud of 21% or more in H1b. Here is the corollay, even if 25% is fraud, the remaining 75% is legitimate. Now the 25% fraud should be curtailed and steps need to be taken to eradicate this fraud, but it does not mean the entire program is bad and needs to be scraped.

Similarly another point referenced by the antis is that the GAO report determined that about 50% jobs are paid entry level salaries. The GAO did say that. This is one of the points that antis use to show that the H1 program is used as a cheap labor replacement for US workers. But what they conveniently left out is that the same GAO report mentioned that when split by age groups (i think it was 22 to 34, 35 to 45, 45 to 55 and 55 and above), the H1 employees earned at least equal to and in most cases more than their US counterparts. For eg, this means that h1 workers in the late 30s earned more than or equal to US workers in the same age range for the same type of work. Now keep in mind that this is in addition to all the legal and admin and gov fees that must be paid for the H1 process. So the argument that H1 is a cheap replacement is a moot point.

Another point mentioned by antis is that the unemployment is at 10% and so immig levels should be reduced. This is absurd. For one, the unemployment levels in the STEM/IT sector is around 4%. This is defined as full employment by the US govt. As a reference, even in boom times, the unemployment will be around this figure. So this is also moot.

The point is that the antis come up with creative ways to oppose anything related to immigration. Most of these are racists, some are disgruntled because of lack of skills and some just want to earn higher for the same work they do and want to do it easily by reducing the supply. What they fail to realize is that by reducing the supply, they will not earn more, the job will be outsourced.

I would urge everyone to educate themselves and respond to antis in a polite way, highlighting their ignorance without any arrogance. Usually when people respond with emotions, things get escalated easily.

Ask any anti who has been personally affected by the system, there will be very few and these are probably cases where there was a lack of skill or the person was overpaid for the work they were doing. There are very few genuine cases where someone is sidelined because they are US workers. Such cases need to be reported and this should not be allowed.

Other than that, i think most of the times, it is just a matter of principle/fear/ignorance that drives these anti's arguments.
