We are planning to go for vacation Cancun/Maya Riveria this spring.. I understand we need to get Mexico visa since we are on AP..

We've traveled to India multiple times on AP..

Can someone share their experience visiting Cancun, Mexico on Advance Parole?

- Any issues we should be aware of?
- While coming back, where do they perform immigration check?
- Is it safe to visit Cancun with all the crime going on in Mexico?

Appreciate some thoughts from someone who recently visited..

thanks,

You don't need a visa for Mexico if you are going directly from the USA. That includes for AP.

I went on a cruise to Cozymel in Sep '10. Not sure if you are planning to go on cruise or some other way, but my comments below are for going by cruise.

- they performed the immigration check at galveston port after we got off. They didn't have the stamp for "Paroled" and I had to wait for 1 hr till they could find the stamp. :) Apart from that no issues.
- I am told all the touristy places in Mexico are very safe. Most of the drug violence is along the US border. the yucatan peninsula (where cancun is) is particularly safe. Of course, you should check the US gov travel advisories before leaving. They'll tell you what violence situations are like.

Thanks for your response. I'm planning Air travel from NY area..

Per Mexico consulate in NY, it seems AP holders do need visa if they don't have visa stamped in passport....

Visas para Extranjeros (http://consulmex.sre.gob.mx/nuevayork/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=45&Itemid=73) - click on General information

Below text from their FAQ section -

Take into account that starting May 1st, 2010, all those foreigners, regardless of their nationality, visiting Mexico for tourist or business matters won't need a Mexican visa as long as they have with them a valid and not expired USA visa in the passport. In this context, if you have a valid US visa in the passport you do not need to obtain a Mexican visa.

If the USA visa in the passport already expired, I-797 Forms, Advanced Parole Forms, DS-2019 Forms won’t be good enough for entering to Mexico.

If the USA visa stamped in your passport already expired but you have an official document or form proving your legal status in USA, you will be able to submit it in order to apply for a Mexican visa in this Consulate.

U might be right about needing a visa then. Better to check with the embassy.

I think for a cruise, you don't need a visa.

thanks,

We flew to Cancun/Riviera Maya in second week of May 2010. In simple terms the new rule is "no mexico visa required as long as you have visa or AP to return back to US". I double checked with local Mexico consular office to ensure that we can travel on AP without needing a Mexico visa.

At the cancun airport the immigration officer was not aware of the new rule (since it was just 2 weeks into it) and called her supervisor who confirmed that AP is acceptable. Overall they were very friendly and we were involved in small talk while we were waiting for the officer to check with her supervisor.

We faced no issues while returning. Immigration check was done in US port of entry.

Thanks,
Prasad
