IV effort needs 50 thousand dollars to make sure we can meet our immediate needs and also make a big impact via this advocacy day event. There are several large and small expenses like booking hotel conference room near Capitol hill for organizing the event/situation room, Organizing reception for lawmakers, their staffers, and administration officials to attend, creating advocacy packets for each appointment taken, advocacy firm fees for helping out with a large event like this etc. We can plan more ideas like Press briefing event, full page ads in national newspapers if we can have sufficient resources. This event will most certainly bring our issues to the national center stage and help us get much needed immigration relief in the months ahead. IV is starting this campaign ahead of time to better plan and execute our advocacy day (http://immigrationvoice.org/forum/forum85-action-items-for-everyone/1901186-action-item-advocacy-days-in-washington-dc-in-april-2011-a.html).

We are a small grassroots organization with a strong resolve and when we all pool in our energies, intelligence and resources; we can all collectively create wonders. We do not want our limited funds to stop us from going all out. Despite our full time jobs, IV core is committed to work harder and we are happy to have the asset of a large IV community to support us in this mammoth task.

This post is to urge everyone to come forward and help yourself in this short term funding drive. If you have not contributed till now, please consider contributing. If you cannot make it to DC due to personal or professional reasons then do show your admiration for our effort. If you have recently received your green cards, then please consider contributing as a way of celebrating and endorsing our effort. Times are tough for any immigration relief and in tough times we have to work harder to get anything done. Your contribution, words of support and enthusiasm helps everybody to maintain higher level of motivation which is so important for this kind of community effort. It is up to each member if you feel from your heart to contribute towards this cause. If you decide to contribute, you can either easily contribute via our website page (http://immigrationvoice.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=26&Itemid=44#onetimepaypal) or you could send us a check. We suggest individual contributions of $50/$100 to cover the cost of this event.

Checks can be mailed to
Immigration Voice
3561 Homestead Rd #375
Santa Clara, CA 95051

We request each and every member reading this post to please contribute and post your donation amount on this thread for tracking purposes. We will continue to post updates that will make us all feel proud and part of this organization. Thank you for your support. Please keep it up.

Volunteers who want to keep track of the contributions and provide encouragement, please contact me.

To conduct such an effort, IV also needs contributions. Our estimated cost is around $50,000 for the event. We need generous contributions from our members, especially from members who are unable to make it to the DC event. To be clear, all one time contributions starting from February 1st will be considered as a contribution to the advocacy event. All the recurring donations will continue to go towards Donor forum access. Our advocacy event costs will be on top of our regular costs and we need to pay for both.

50 thousand members and only 10 people contributed?

Shameful. If this is the situation, will IV cancel the event?

I hope many people will contribute when the days are close. The sad part is that they do not realize that IV needs to know the collection amount details in advance to organize a mega event.

You all do amazing work and provide great information.I just did my first contribution of $100 and have become a recurring contributor for the same amount. If needed I will increase my contribution for March and April, as I will not be able to attend the event due to Family.

I tried to convince 4 EB3 friends with a priority date between mid 2002 and late 2003 , and all of them have lost hope for GC and they are just very pessimist about the process .

There are some who are concerned about not getting green cards , but give the excuse of being busy.I am trying to convince them to contribute and attend.

Thanks:-

There has been some pickup in contributions, however based on this average, we may only reach 25% of our funding goal. Some things like reserving conference rooms, appointments, need to be done well in advance.
If anyone already has other large financial commitments you could even send a check for a smaller amount and post it here for accounting. Please also let all your friends know about this event and attend and/or contribute. I promise to contribute more.

I have donated 50$ by check today and will try to make it there.
Question for the organizers: If we just concentrate on the visa recapture bill, is that not a one shot solution for all issues. Because as per a very respected lawyer, that will make all EB categories current and will stay there for at least 2 more years.

Thanks,

Because people do not understand. Most people take it for granted - especially these kinds of efforts.

The problem with immigrants is - majority immigrants stick to community and talk to people from their community and do not go beyond that. Most people go to work and come back, they open IV just like facebook etc. only for information or time pass.

What is the difference between the two? IMO, two words "Effective Marketing". Come on, where are the MBA's among us who can offer strategy? Actually I feel we are so backward that we don't even need MBA's to improve from here, just any simple ideas

I respectfully disagree. It has nothing to do with marketing, fraud desi companies put up free ads on sulekha, its the mindset of a large number of our audience we are missing and need to account for. maybe it has to do with jugaad/kludge - the goal defines the means (loosely).
Of course many of these expectations cannot be satisfied in a honest non profit.

A dinner for a family costs $50 easily.
A movie for a family costs $50.

The mindset is incepted deep inside and it is extremely difficult to change.

Sometimes, I see people wanting to do something, but their spouses don't allow them to.

When I told people that I received GC - some desis who r still waiting got pissed. I heard all sorts of things, some say "You cheated", some say "Never knew you were Eb2", some say, "Are you sure?, have you got the cards yet?, Did you finish biometrics?" Some eb3 folks said "We will get ours too, some issue with finger prints , my husband's boss is very close to the congressman and we have influence in INS", some say "Your lawyer did some magic" etc.....

People carry such mindsets, it is difficult to bring about awareness and change.

tonyHK12: another similar comment I see is - IV hasn't achieved anything in 2 months, so I'll quit IV and won't donate
agree, it cannot be really changed by us. even if people willingly try to achieve a new mindset with positive programming, it takes months to achieve.
Guess we have to work with what we have. There may be a solution, but only people with a similar mindset can come up with it.

People discuss superbowl, cricket, food, movies, schools, everything, people discuss about their 140, 485 , ead etc... everyone knows there is a problem but pretend as if there is no problem and it is just a part of life.

Sometime back on IV the motivation levels was different. We did have a sizable crowd during the 2007 rally in DC. We did have 200+ people doing advocacy work.

I hope people come forward again.

Looks like we lack people with good leadership qualities on IV now especially a lot of IV members are not active anymore and guess it is just slow.

Positive programming. Could we start it inside ourselves first? Stop ranting and lamenting?

The point is not that tri-state was crooked etc. The point is, they got the cash because they made themselves known as an entity that does some service

Same with IV. If IV is just a rant board, who will believe? We must change IV!

Well, it goes beyond that. This is a "complicated story with no sub titles".

IV website is a board where people of all kinds visit and there is no control over stuff. Just go to any blog site - we see 100 rants and crazy comments as against a few wise talk.

I guess we have to live with it and keep pushing people. Sometimes loud and sometimes gently.

My friend, it is to "push the people" that I am saying all this. How best can we push? Through word of mouth, or thru full campaign?

Another idea: How about restructuring the forums?
In the home page, we promote only those discussions that are important to all, like advocacy.
In next tab, we take on the discussions that are based on individual problems
And all else, can go to the third tab

Also on home page, the following items (just some examples of general interest matter):
- Advocacy day. Donations received vs required.
- Big red button: Donate
- Some links to recent news items on immigration

Home page should have text content that introduces IV, its activities, and a small lecture on why skilled immigration is important

My friend, there is a LOT of difference between the words "rant" and "idea". It is very difficult to confuse between the two:

rant (rnt)
v. rant·ed, rant·ing, rants
v.intr.
To speak or write in an angry or violent manner; rave.
v.tr.
To utter or express with violence or extravagance: a dictator who ranted his vitriol onto a captive audience.
n.
1. Violent or extravagant speech or writing.
2. A speech or piece of writing that incites anger or violence: "The vast majority [of teenagers logged onto the Internet] did not encounter recipes for pipe bombs or deranged rants about white supremacy" (Daniel Okrent).
3. Chiefly British Wild or uproarious merriment.

Also:
rant [rænt]
vb
1. to utter (something) in loud, violent, or bombastic tones
2. (intr) Chiefly Scot to make merry; frolic
n
1. loud, declamatory, or extravagant speech; bombast
2. Chiefly Scot a wild revel
3. Scot an energetic dance or its tune
[from Dutch ranten to rave; related to German ranzen to gambol]
ranter n
ranting adj & n
rantingly adv

i·de·a (-d)
n.
1. Something, such as a thought or conception, that potentially or actually exists in the mind as a product of mental activity.
2. An opinion, conviction, or principle: has some strange political ideas.
3. A plan, scheme, or method.
4. The gist of a specific situation; significance: The idea is to finish the project under budget.
5. A notion; a fancy.
6. Music A theme or motif.
7. Philosophy
a. In the philosophy of Plato, an archetype of which a corresponding being in phenomenal reality is an imperfect replica.
b. In the philosophy of Kant, a concept of reason that is transcendent but nonempirical.
c. In the philosophy of Hegel, absolute truth; the complete and ultimate product of reason.
8. Obsolete A mental image of something remembered.

here is a report which says there are more than 300,000 GC visa numbers were unused.
go to page 35 or search pdf for recapture to see chart.
from the report
This dialogue is critical considering that when USCIS
and DOS fail to accurately estimate cut-off dates, visas go
unused or are shifted to other family or employment-based
categories. Congress passed legislation permitting the
recapture of some unused visa numbers from previous
years.119 Figure 19 presents data on visa numbers “lost”
between 1992 and 2009 for both employment and family
preference categories.

recapturing visas is the easiest way to clear backlog. it has happened before and can happen again, if all of us try.

At the risk of being repetitive - have you sent a email to IV (or sent a private message to "Starsun") with your transaction details of the recurring donations? If not, please do so. If you've already done so then please send a follow-up note. It typically takes a week from your original email. If nothing worked, please pick up the phone and call them up directly.

Guys/Gals,
We need your time, your enthusiasm on the advocacy days. IV is a grass roots organization. You are the grass roots.

We face problems of backlogs, and career uncertainty. IV is offering a solution, if implemented, it will bring relief to all. IV needs your help to deliver what you and I "NEED" AND "WANT".

HELP IV HELP YOU.

We need heavy participation on the lobby days, I need volunteers from different states to ask me "How can I help?" instead, I am trying to find volunteers! I have been able to persuade members who have received GCs to help out, but getting members who are still in the mess are either unaware of the advocacy days (in spite of the thread running on the home page for the past month) or are not ready to talk to the employers to take the two days off. Capitol Hill runs on weekdays and therefore it is necessary for you to take the time off.

Come on guys, you can do better than this. Donors, members, guests - we are all in this together!

Tony,

Not everyone who contributes will post their contribution in the forum. Would it be possible from IV to get the latest contribution totals?

Thanks!

I don't think its much different from what is posted. Only one time contributions are being considered for this event.
I have a shared doc with StarSun and all known ones have been accounted for the above total.
Only one month left to achieve our funding goals.

It does look like there are only a few hundred (~200) willing to actively participate for the good of others. About 0.04 % of all EB2, EB3 filers.

One possible strategy.......
Dividing 50,000 into that, it will be great if you hardworking people, fighting for legal immigrants, can touch about $200-400 each,
while the rest watch from the sidelines and cheer for us :), and also debate & analyze spiritedly.....
I'm at $300 now for this event

Over the past 4 years, I have contributed to IV several times. I was also a monthly subscriber of $20 for over a year until my credit card expired and the payments stopped.
What pains me is that inspite of several requests, i have not been granted access to donor forms. Perhaps there is a waiting list for donor access or my priority date is not current for the same.

I will try my best to make it to DC events, but please accept my small contribution in case i am unable to make the trip.

Additionally , I saw a post about "5 reasons to not contribute" that was a gud one. I will bump that one up ...I am surprised that we cant get a 1000 people to contribute some money..An avg of $50 will get us beyond $50,000 (Obviously we dont need even 1000 people because many will contribute 100 or more) ..There just too many leaches who wait for others to do thier job..

Tony, what is the deadline for raising the money?

thanks indigokiwi. The deadline is end of March, but we would like a large amount of this raised much earlier, since it involves making reservations, booking appointments, for Eg. with the lobbyist.
We need to raise about $1000 everyday to meet the goal.

Friends,

I asked most of my friends to donate amount and they are not even on this site. They have donated some. I have been following up with all of my friends. Please do the same. Ask your friends and follow up with them. Also can we have a Facebook page for this advocacy day also??

thanks for taking the initiative and donating again manish1905. It is sad to see only a few 100 'active. Most people want to see results before donating, but most don't realize we can't get results without thousands working first for many months.
So its up to us to work extra hard to achieve things that will benefit 500,000 people.
Things like Visa Recapture, which benefit 100s of thousands benefit everyone including EB3, as there are only about 40-60,000 EB2s left.
